Red Barrels invites you to experience the terrifying horror, this time with friends. Whether you go through the trials alone or in teams, if you survive long enough and complete the therapy, Murkoff will happily let you go… but will you be the same?

Summary In the era of the Cold War, human guinea pigs are recruited involuntarily by the benevolent folks at the Murkoff Corporation to test advanced methods of brainwashing and mind control. In a world of mistrust, fear, and violence, your morality will be questioned, your endurance will be tested, and your sanity will shatter. All in the name of progress, science, and profit.

 

 

SURVIVE: SOLO OR COOP

You are all prisoners of Murkoff trapped within their facilities. You can choose to complete the trials alone or face them in a group of 2, 3, or 4 players. Coop is never mandatory when it comes to mandatory objectives, but cooperation can be extremely beneficial. Regardless of the number of players in your party, the goal is to survive and make it out. Ultimately, your goal is to complete Murkoff’s therapy and earn the right to be released back into society. To do this, you must complete the MK Trials and Challenges.

The trials are immersive treatments based on the story and take a specific amount of time to complete. Mk-Challenges are shorter treatments that appear in modified or redesigned sections of an existing map.

HIDE OR FOLD

In the pure Outlast way, the core game includes avoiding enemies, hiding from them, and attempting to escape. Murkoff will provide tools that you can use to enhance your stealth, create escape opportunities, slow down enemies, and much more. However, you’ll need to earn these tools and work hard to improve them. The tools will allow you to:

• Distract enemies
• Blind them
• See through walls
• Heal yourself and those around you

Murkoff will ask you to perform disturbing tasks in each trial or mk-challenges. Only after completing these tasks will you be allowed to exit the Trials or MK Challenges.

CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION

Customize and create your own test subject. Your cell is your home while you complete the therapy, and you can decorate it as you like. Choose tools, upgrades, and perks that fit your play style.

You have been abducted by the Murkoff Corporation to undergo unethical experiments that will alter your psyche and behavior throughout the duration of the Trials. Collect documents and items that will help prove Murkoff’s negligence towards its patients.

 

The Process:

Break the Self: Murkoff aims to shatter the fundamental beliefs of the subject. Aspects of the person’s identity are systematically attacked. Similar to boot camp or indoctrination, the goal is to force an individual to cleanse themselves of anything considered sacred or taboo, things that restrict their behavior. The continuous assault on their identity, guilt, and self-betrayal eventually leads to a breakdown.

Build the Self: It’s the bad cop, the beginning of a good cop. Rejecting the old ideology leaves a void into which the new ideology can be introduced. In contrast to the old ideology, it serves as a perfect point of attraction as the individual departs from the old one in search of an opposite replacement. Progress accelerates as the new ideology is depicted as harmonious and ideally tailored to the individual’s needs. Collectivism and serenity replace pain and punishment. Just as the individual fears the annihilation of their self, they are offered a small kindness, a brief respite from the assault on their identity.

Salvation: Confronted with the stark contrast of past pain and the rosy glow of the future presented by the new ideology, the individual rejects their final faith in the old ideology, confessing any deep secrets that remain and takes on the full mantle of the new ideology. This is often felt, and has been described by many, as a form of rebirth. It may be accompanied by initiation ceremonies as the individual is accepted and integrated into the new order. Rituals typically include solemn declarations made by the individual regarding full and complete acceptance of the new ideology, pledging faith in its leaders. Flag salutes, kissing of other artifacts, and other symbolic acts, performed ceremoniously, all firmly anchor them on the new ground.
